Title:Metrology and diagnostic X-ray spectra in plasmas
Objectives (recommended length: 2000-3000 char):
High precision spectroscopy (HPS) has been used as a metrology technique in several environments, from nuclear fusion to industrial plasma film deposition processes. This technique allows us to obtain quantities that enable the plasma characterization. HPS may be used in in high accuracy conditions where the X-ray emission spectra, allow for the identification not only the elements present in the plasma and respective charge states, but also its density and temperature.

Metrology and plasma diagnostics are very important subjects, namely in nuclear inertial confinement fusion and in magnetic confinement fusion. During this preparatory phase of the next generation of nuclear fusion devices, a special attention is given to the question of tungsten impurities in the plasma that can lead to power losses and to the deterioratin of the conditions for a sustainable fusion. According to the decisions taken in ITER, this element will be one of the constituents of the walls, vertical targets, dome and the "diverter". Another example where the metrology and plasma diagnostics has acquired special importance are the ECRIS (Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source) ion sources which are characterized by producing large populations of highly charged ions and electrons in high temperature. The aim of this work is the optimization of the metrology technique and plasma diagostics.
With that purpose will be developed a methodology that allows the modeling of X-ray high resolution spectra. This will require not only the creation and implementation of appropriate algorithms, for each particular kind of plasma, but also the calculation of atomic parameters necessary for the model. In the end, they should allow us to obtain in real time some properties of the plasma that are difficult to measure directly, for example the plasma temperature and density.

This project will be developed in collaboration with international research teams that will obtains experimental plasma spectra to analyze, namely the Laboratoire Kastler Brossel (LKB), École Normale Supérieure, Université Pierre et Marie Curie e CNRS, Paris, France.
Framework (recommended length: 500-2000 char):
The candidate will participate in the experiment with the ECRIS ion source that will take place in Paris in the Laboratoire Kastler Brossel. This will constitute a good opportunity to know and to work with these kind of experimental apparatus.

Data treatment and spectra analysis, of the data obtained in Paris, will be done in Lisbon where the required computational means that already exists in the Departments of Physics of the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa and in Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. The proponents have a large experience in the atomic structure calculations needed to perform this work.

DAEPHYS strongly encourages the presentation of thesis projects in co-supervision by researchers from two of the universities participating in the Program. In this field, explain the benefits resulting from the proposed co-supervision and the involvement of elements from the two universities, e.g. building critical mass teams, profiting from existing infrastructures or advanced equipments, profiting from expert technical know-how, etc. If the proposal involves only one University, write n/a.

This project will contribute to strengthen the collaboration between both teams, by sharing both expertise and equipment, which is essential to the success of the proposal.
